Teachers design balanced literacy classrooms that promote enjoyment, skill and understanding of the processes of reading and writing. Curricular units are designed around the ‘best practices’ of Lucy Calkins. In addition, teachers create Units of Study that focus on grade level standards that develop reading of informational text around social science content and social justice issues.
The Reading & Writing Project
Lucy Calkins and her Teachers College Reading and Writing Project coauthors have drawn on their more than 30 years of research and hands-on work to support teachers. The Reading and Writing Project’s approach to instruction recognizes that “one size fits all” does not match the realities of the classrooms and schools in which they work.
Reading and writing workshops are deliberately designed to offer a simple and predictable environment so that the teacher can focus on the complex work of observing students' progress and teaching into their needs.
